SnehAI is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered chatbot, housed on Facebook Messenger. The chatbot provides a secure, personalised and non-judgemental space for young people to share concerns and learn about issues related to sexual and reproductive health as well as digital safety. SnehAI, built-in Hinglish (a mix of Hindi and English), uses storytelling, games and videos to engage users in conversations on a range of sexual and reproductive health issues like virginity, contraception, same-sex attraction, masturbation and safe online behaviour.
SnehAI was launched in 2019 as an extension of Population Foundation of India’s transmedia social and behaviour change communication programme, Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon (MKBKSH; I, A Woman, Can Achieve, Anything). The avatar is based on the lead protagonist of the show, Dr. Sneha. While creating the avatar, the core aim was to ensure that it came across as confident and well informed, someone who people would look up to. The avatar is approachable and looks like someone who young people can see as a friend. Someone fun and one of them. Also, someone they can openly talk to.

In 2019, SnehAI was launched as a keyword-based chatbot in Hinglish. The bot reached over 37,000+ users with a total of 1.7 million conversations. Given the success of the chatbot in connecting with young people, the technology behind SnehAI was further upgraded to a Natural Language Processing (NLP) model. The NLP enhancement allowed the chatbot to handle free text responses from users and map the correct responses to the themes. The language model continues to be re-trained based on user inputs over time.
SnehAI chatbot is a safe space for adolescents and young people. Since its inception, it has provided credible information about issues pertaining to sexual and reproductive health. In 2021, new themes around safe online behaviour were introduced to the chatbot – with the key focus on the various aspects of Online Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (OCSEA). The idea is to link young people to relevant resources and helplines that they may find useful. The upgraded SnehAI version has shown a tremendous increase in the user base.
